Ascent Xtrata

Datasheet

Ascent Xtrata uses exclusive Xtrata technology from Kofax to make forms processing successful under real business conditions. With Ascent Xtrata, you can use your existing forms and business processes because setup is a breeze. It automatically identifies all zones on a form. You just click on a zone, or use the lasso to select multiple zones, and Ascent Xtrata instantly suggests the associated field names and recognition profiles. That means you can add new forms or make changes to an existing form without intervention from an expert.

You can also add new scanners, make copies of a form and accommodate normal scanner wear without system updates or manual processing. Ascent Xtrata's superior image registration makes it possible by automatically adjusting for stretched or scaled images. That means more forms are successfully processed, more information is automatically captured, and less manual data entry is needed.

Everyone knows how to use a Web browser and an office copier. Now, Ascent Ricochet, the latest browser-based extension of Ascent Capture, enables any knowledge worker to employ these simple tools to initiate production document workflow for the important document packages they help create. No one knows more about a document than the people who created it or who work closely with the information it contains. Thus, they are the best qualified to index it for later retrieval and processing. Ascent Ricochet empowers these content experts to initiate this workflow faster and more accurately than ever before.

The Ascent Advanced Forms Modules are powered by Neurascript INDICIUS and integrate seamlessly into Ascent Capture, giving you all the components you need to convert scanned forms into clean and verified data:

Advanced Forms Recognition module offers high accuracy on a wide range of forms, including documents that were previously considered unsuitable for automatic processing. This powerful module can capture semi-structured and tabular data, even when tables dynamically change format or extend over multiple columns or pages.

Advanced Forms Corrector is a high-volume data-correction module that lets you confirm or correct any characters that were rejected by Recognition. This module is built for speed and ease of use: it enables correction of individual characters, giving you fast and efficient data repair with minimum keystrokes. The Corrector’s screen layout includes last-field and next-field viewing, proven in customer trials to yield greater throughput and improve correction of rejected characters.

Advanced Forms Completion module is ideal for high-volume validation, delivering clean and verified data to the Ascent Release module. It can be configured for a number of data capture scenarios, such as reviewing data captured by Recognition or verifying keyed data from other sources. In trials, Completion has reduced data entry times by 50 percent, even when compared with custom applications.

Many organizations rely on document-driven business processes that originate at a remote location but must be completed elsewhere. The Ascent Capture Internet Server is a proven, reliable method for accelerating and reducing the cost of these remote business processes.

ACI Server is an optional module in the Ascent family that enables you to capture documents and data from your organization's remote offices directly into your central Ascent system. ACI Server also enables remote scanning, indexing and data capture via connections ranging from dedicated lines to inexpensive dial-up service as well as corporate intranets.

In a typical ACI Server installation, each remote site is equipped with a standard Ascent Capture scan station for imaging batches of documents. Additional Ascent workstations can be included for data extraction, indexing or even validation.

When the scanned batches are completed, they are transmitted to the central ACI Server over a corporate network or even the Internet, and then routed to the appropriate Ascent Capture stations on the central network. The inbound documents can be processed through additional queues such as advanced forms processing or additional validation. Finally, the images and data are delivered into any of nearly 100 content management, database or line-of-business systems.

Kofax VirtualReScan is an electronic check-point for scanned images. As quickly as images pass through the scanner, VRS performs a multi-point inspection of each document. VRS instantly checks and adjusts for alignment (skew), brightness, contrast, and image clarity. Any inconsistencies are immediately corrected by VRS so that only the straightest, most readable images are moved into your application.  It's like having a quality control team review every document as it is scanned.

PC Magazine"Scanning lives and even thrives...the biggest change for the better has been the availability of Kofax VRS." -- PC Magazine

The purpose of document scanning is to electronically create accurate black-and-white images of original source documents. The originals may also be in black-and-white, but most likely they will feature colors, shaded backgrounds, reversed text or other elements difficult for a bitonal scanner to translate into crisp, clean, black-and-white images.

Without VirtualReScan, even the most skilled scanner operator must go through a series of scans and rescans to obtain an acceptable image from a complex document. Even this process yields less than perfect results. And the more documents you have to scan, the longer and more costly this process is.

Click here to view the Doculabs VRS Report

An alternative is to capture the document images as color or grayscale files. While this results in cleaner, more readable images, it also results in excessively large files -- too large for rapid transport and storage over most conventional networks.

VRS provides the ideal solution. It uses the 256 shades of a grayscale image to analyze and determine the optimum settings for each document. It then converts this image into a small, perfectly readable black-and-white image. Thus VRS gives you the best of two worlds: the highest quality black-and-white images with small file sizes.

How VRS Works

The beauty of VRS is that it is so simple to use. Most operations are automated to accelerate the scanning process, reducing the need for highly trained scanner operators.

Reduced Document Preparation

Simply place all your documents -- no matter their size, color or orientation -- into the automatic document feeder, hit the scan button, and away you go. VRS will automatically detect any paper jams, bent corners, or other equipment conflicts and alert you of the problem.

Automatic Deskew

VRS begins by automatically straightening each scanned image. This is particularly crucial when automated recognition techniques such as OCR and ICR are to be performed. VRS also allows operators to intercede and manually fine tune the skew angle of documents as necessary.

Improved Image Clarity

VRS analyzes the brightness and contrast levels of each document, comparing them to the user-defined acceptable range. Exceptions are automatically corrected or can be displayed to the operator for manual adjustment. In manual mode, the operator uses the on-screen view of the image to readjust clarity settings until the desired result is obtained.

Eliminated Noise

VRS lets the scanner operator further enhance the image by thinning or thickening lines and characters and removing excessive speckling -- all with easy-to-use slider controls. With noise reduction, you obtain crisp, clean images every time.

Accelerated Scanning

In high-volume situations where scanning speed is critical, VRS can be set to perform fast scanning at a lower dots-per-inch (dpi) resolution. After analyzing the image, VRS will then convert the final bitonal image into a higher-resolution dpi for better on-screen viewing.

Real-Time Analysis

VRS will display optimum settings for each scanned image to allow users to create new default settings for common documents. Thus, a form printed on difficult-to-read color paper can be scanned and analyzed so that the optimum settings for that type of document can be created and saved for future use. VRS lets you save multiple document profiles to accelerate the scanning process.

Two Flavors Meet Every Need

For production environments with large scanning volumes, a VRS-Ready scanner assisted by a Kofax Adrenaline board gives you the power to drive optimized documents through your system at 35 to 125 pages per minute.

For environments requiring high quality but lower volume (6 to 25 pages per minute), VRS with a desktop or personal document scanner is the ideal solution. And the new Adrenaline 450, 650 and 650i SCSI scanner controllers provide the best way to connect that scanner to your PC.

The VRS Benefits are Clear

Perfect Images: Scanning is only half the battle. The most important part about capturing images is your ability to find, retrieve and use them later. The superior quality of VRS-created images means documents are easier to index and easier to read.

Perfect Images logo

Improved Recognition: Since VRS automatically straightens and cleans each scanned image, the accuracy of your optical character recognition and handwriting recognition software increases dramatically.

Improved Recognition logo

Internet-Ready Images: Noisy backgrounds and shaded areas are suppressed, resulting in ultra-compact image files ideal for display and rapid retrieval on your Web site.

Internet-Ready Images logo

Rescanning Eliminated: One of the most time-consuming tasks in scanning is actually rescanning -- putting documents back through the scanner and adjusting scanner settings until an acceptable image is obtained. VRS performs all enhancements in real-time -- no more rescanning.

Rescanning Eliminated logo

Ease of Use: Scanning remains simple and easy with VRS. Operators do not need special knowledge of scanning, resolution or image enhancement. They just press the scan button, and VRS does the rest.

Ease of Use logo

There are dozens of VRS Ready scanners available today, and the list is growing. VRS is compatible with all applications based on Kofax ImageControls, including Kofax Ascent Capture as well as applications from Adobe, FileNET, Microsystems Technology and ReadSoft. And VRS also supports ISIS®- and TWAIN-based scan applications.

Mohomine technology from Kofax helps businesses and government agencies get more out of their workflow, transaction, CRM and decision-support applications by automating data entry, document routing and categorization for unstructured documents, whether paper-based or electronic.

More than 85 percent of all enterprise data is unstructured -- trapped in correspondence, e-mails, Web pages, PDF files, paper contracts and so on where the location of the salient information cannot be easily predicted. Traditional capture technology can handle very little of this data and only a little more of semi-structured and structured documents such as forms. The result is that companies and government organizations spend billions yearly to manually structure this information so they can use it.

Mohomine technology from Kofax changes the equation.

Mohomine extraction technology is currently used in PeopleSoft and Oracle human resources solutions for electronic resumes, and is an important part of Ascent for Peoplesoft HRMS for efficiently processing paper resumes.

Mohomine classification technology is also a key component of the "Document Exploitation" solution being developed for In-Q-Tel and intelligence agencies to improve the transformation of disorganized paper documents into readable, prioritized, actionable intelligence.

The patented Mohomine technologies are:

Highly Scalable. Mohomine technology uses pattern recognition techniques that can process huge volumes of text data on low-end, inexpensive hardware. Humans can classify 20 to 100 documents per hour. Mohomine-based software can classify 20 to 100 documents per second. Another way to look at it: The Mohomine Classifier can categorize between 50-100 megabytes of text a minute on desktop hardware -- about a 300-page novel per second.

Language Independent. Unlike many natural language processing approaches, Mohomine’s pattern recognition software doesn’t rely on understanding each language. It has been used successfully with many European languages, Arabic and Chinese.

Highly Accurate. Accuracy ranges from the mid-60 percent to the high-90 percent range, depending on the type of document. According to Gartner, a classifier which achieves 60-percent accuracy justifies the cost of installing and maintaining the system.

Easy to Deploy and Integrate. The learn-by-example architecture and APIs that are easy to understand and use enable Mohomine-based software to be deployed quickly and at low cost by non-experts in classification and extraction. Competing, rules-based architectures require the labor-intensive development and maintenance of ontologies for each unique application.
